Kevin A. Morrison is a scholar, academic leader, and filmmaker whose work spans nineteenth-century literary studies, media history, and global literary culture. He currently serves as Mingde Distinguished Professor of British Literature and Humanities at Henan University, where he directs the Institute for World Literature. He has previously held academic appointments in the United States, Singapore, and China.

 

Grounded in nineteenth-century studies, his research examines storytelling across forms ranging from print culture and periodicals to television and film. His books and articles explore the relationships among narrative, media, space, and everyday life, including how serialized storytelling connects literary, media, and social worlds. His work also addresses liberalism, domestic and imperial culture, and environmental and nonhuman questions. His four monographs include the MLA-award-winning Victorian Liberalism and Material Culture and The Provincial Fiction of Mitford, Gaskell, and Eliot, a study of place, form, and literary history. 

 

Kevin is president of the Society for Global Nineteenth-Century Studies (SGNCS), a geographically and disciplinarily diverse network of scholars focused on the world’s interconnectedness between 1750 and 1914. He edits the society’s journal, Global Nineteenth-Century Studies, and co-edits its book series, Studies in the Global Nineteenth Century, with Liverpool University Press. He also serves as book series editor of Anthem Impact in Victorian Popular Fiction, a general editor of the journal Cultural History, and on the editorial and advisory boards of several journals and book series.

Kevin has secured more than $620,000 USD in competitive research funding from foundations, libraries, universities, and government agencies including the American Philosophical Society, the New York Public Library, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. His work has been recognized through election to the Royal Asiatic Society, the Royal Society of Arts, and the Royal Historical Society. He has twice served as the Lynn Wood Neag Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Connecticut and as a visiting fellow at the National University of Singapore.

Alongside his scholarly work, Kevin has directed research institutes, developed interdisciplinary programs, and organized international conferences and symposia across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

His creative work in film extends longstanding interests in narrative, genre, and media. He has written and produced several short films screened internationally and recently wrote and directed the feature film Hucksters

An award-winning teacher and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE), Kevin has also contributed extensively to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
