The Global / Oceanic / Nineteenth Century

Along with Mark Celeste (Hampden-Sydney College), I organized a two-day international symposium on "The Global / Oceanic / Nineteenth Century" in Los Angeles, 5-6 November 2022. The symposium was held to formally launch Global Nineteenth-Century Studies. The journal, which I edit, is the flagship publication of the Society for Global Nineteenth-Century Studies and is published by Liverpool University Press.

In addition to robust attendance in Los Angeles, synchronous panels were held in Australia and Hong Kong. The conference keynote address was given by Alice Te Punga Somerville, Professor of English and of Critical Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia. Some of the other speakers and respondents included Margaret Cohen (Stanford), Adrian Shubert (York University), Boyd Cothran (York University), Charne Lavery (University of Pretoria), and Humberto Garcia (UC Merced).
